Sustainability in our built environment and heritage – through the reduction of both Imperial’s operational carbon and guiding our clients to the best sustainability measures in reducing their greenhouse gases on a project – is our ethos for working together towards a carbon zero planet.

The first factor is the understanding of the embedded carbon already in our built heritage and how it is more sustainably effective to adapt an existing building by extending and to undertake extensive refurbishment using sustainable reducing energy measures, rather than demolish and re-build which has a far greater construction operational carbon output.

Imperial have reduced their own operational carbon by 32% in five years by retro-fitting energy reduction technology measures throughout our offices: applying External Wall Insulation (EWI) to the façades; fitting energy rated windows and doors; and planting a huge number of trees to balance the carbon.  Energy efficient vehicles have been introduced and, where possible, local labour and suppliers are used to further reduce our operational carbon.
